CHEBOYGAN — On Monday, the Cheboygan Area Schools Board of Education approved a project to replace some windows and doors in the high school — several of which need asbestos abatement — costing the district over $530,000.
TrenKo Glass, of Warren, Michigan was the only bidder on the project and will be completing the work at the high school. The total amount of the bid was for $543,000, a portion of which was from the architectural fee for work on the project.
"We had our annual asbestos inspection by our contractor," said Cheboygan Area Schools Maintenance and Transportation Supervisor Steve Fleming. "During that inspection, we found three wooden, 20 minute rated fire doors that are insulated with asbestos that are failing."
Originally, the cost for the work to be completed had been just over $489,000. There were some additional doors found that need to be replaced, which were added to the scope of the project.
There were also three doors at the Drift Inn — the restaurant inside Cheboygan Area Schools run by the Career and Technical Education Food Services class — which are also filled with asbestos and need replacement, at a cost of $1,500 each, as well as the framing of those doors.
"Also, we're adding two additional ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) push button doors to the entrance," said Fleming. "Right now there's only — when you first walk in the high school — there's an ADA push button. But once you get in the little vestibule there, you're kind of stuck. So they're going to put another ADA opener there and an ADA opener to the office."
Fleming said there are two new students who will be coming to the high school next year and will need the push buttons installed in order to be able to get into the building.
The two automatic door openers come at a cost of $8,250 each, increasing the bid by $16,500. This brings the total cost of the replacement of the doors — without the abatement fee for the asbestos — to $530,350.
TrenKo Glass was the sole bidder on this project and the school board voted unanimously to approve the contract with the vendor to complete the door replacement, as well as several windows in the building that need replaced.
This contract had already been reviewed by the school board's finance subcommittee, which had recommended the full board approve the contract.
