Starting Monday, May 30, the Tacoma Nature Center at Snake Lake will be closed for improvements including a rebuilt ADA-accessible entry. During the repair process, which is expected to finish by July 4, there will be limited access to outdoor sections including trails and the Discovery Pond Play Area. No restrooms will be open, and parking will be limited.
Of the $503,685 project’s main funding, $400,000, comes from a Tacoma voter-approved 2014 bond, plus $100,000 from Metro Parks operations budget and $3,685 from open space fees. Improvements include: roof repairs, window repairs, including clerestory windows (a new row of windows above eye level), siding and soffit repairs, a new automatic door opener at the main entrance, and replacement of wood stairs and a guard rail.
There will be opportunities during this time to enter the Discovery Pond Play Area, but visitors should call (253) 404-3930 before arriving. In addition, a portion of the trail around Snake Lake will be closed.
"The Tacoma Nature Center is a fabulous place for Tacoma families to explore and learn about nature,” said Metro Parks Tacoma’s Park Board president, Andrea Smith. "These repairs will help keep that natural connection going strong.”
