A man police spotted clambering over the roofs of multiple downtown buildings was in Royal Oak 44th District Court on Friday for a hearing on a charge of methamphetamine possession.
Anthony Joseph Cantineri, 44, of Taylor was jailed on a $5,000, 10 percent, bond following his arraignment Aug. 17.
Police said they first spotted the suspect about 7 p.m. Aug. 16 on top of a building near Main and Fourth streets, then another building at Fourth and Williams streets.
“He was climbing from building to building,” said Royal Oak police Lt. Albert Carter. “He ended up on top of the Metals in Time building at 301 S. Main Street.”
Police said Cantineri complied when they ordered him to come down from the building.
“He stated he was doing videos for YouTube,” Carter said.
Police said they found the suspect was also wanted on outstanding warrants for two criminal sexual offenses in Alpena and disorderly conduct in Harper Woods.
He was carrying a backpack and inside police said they found a glass drug pipe and two small square plastic bags containing methamphetamine.
Cantineri’s criminal history includes convictions for armed robbery, larceny from a vehicle, a felony firearm charge, illegal entry, and multiple counts of trespassing.
The suspect remains in the Oakland County Jail.
A Royal Oak man, 55, caused multiple spider cracks when he hit a glass exit door at the CVS store at 525 E. Fourth Street on Tuesday.
Police said the man went into the store, used an ATM, and tried to purchase something.
“He got frustrated with the long line at the checkout and stormed out of the store,” Royal Oak police Lt. Albert Carter said. “He purposely used his forearm to hit the automatic glass door before it opened.”
The cost of replacing the glass will be over $1,000 and a manager told police the man is banned from the store.
If he returns he will be charged with trespassing.
Police said the suspect also faces a charge of malicious destruction of property.
Police took three reports of catalytic converters stolen from vehicles in the city on Aug. 19.
The thefts were reported between 3:53 a.m. and 8 a.m.
Converters were stolen from vehicles in the 1900 block of East Fourth Street, the 500 block of Amelia Avenue, and the 100 block of North Edison Avenue.
Police said crews of 2 or 3 people typically work fast and saw the converters off of vehicles with a reciprocating saw, often a Sawzall brand.
Police advise that neighbors always call police if they hear a sudden sawing sound outside – especially in the dark morning hours – or see a suspicious person near a parked vehicle.
A 2015 Jeep Cherokee stolen from a woman’s driveway in the 5000 block of Elmhurst Avenue was recovered Thursday in Detroit.
There was no damage to the vehicle, which was reported stolen Wednesday.
Police said the vehicle was left locked and the owner had the key fob when the theft happened.
A Royal Oak man, 46, told police someone stole his backpack and its contents after he set it down outside near Fifth Street and Washington Avenue.
He told police set the backpack down about 6:30 p.m. Aug. 18 while he went to get a coffee.
A laptop computer, bus tickets, a Bible and books from the nearby Oakland Community College library were inside the backpack, police said.
