Paris Saint-Germain have put Gini Wijnaldum on the transfer list, according to reports. The Dutchman only moved there a year ago.

This comes from L’Équipe. They claim that Paris Saint-Germain have made a double-decision in regards to Gini Wijnaldum and it couldn’t look worse for the midfielder.

Not only is the Dutchman on the transfer list but Wijnaldum also isn’t a part of the pre-season squad. It’s typically how clubs treat problem players – or those they literally see no use for. It’s a shocking turnaround in just one year.

Wijnaldum only moved to Paris in 2021, after all. He joined on a free transfer having seen his Liverpool contract expire, reportedly against his will. The move to PSG appeared to be a sensible one as the Parisians chased the Champions League.

However, Wijnaldum was left out of their squad for the knockout rounds after a difficult start to life there. Now they want shot of him completely.

The automatic response to this is to wonder whether Liverpool should ask any questions of PSG. We know that Wijnaldum can more than do a job at Anfield, after all – he knows how to succeed there as well as anyone.

It’s difficult to see it happening, though. Liverpool let Wijnaldum go because he was beyond 30 and asking for sizeable wages – the former is certainly still true and we imagine the latter is, too.

And so paying a transfer fee to sign a player they could have kept last summer would be a strange move. The only possible way the door could open is if Wijnaldum has significantly reduced his wage demands over the last year. That’s certainly not out of the question now that he’s seen life at a rich club, though.

At the very least, Wijnaldum serves as the latest cautionary tale when it comes to leaving Liverpool.
