OGDEN — A man threatened another man with a hammer in a home break-in on Monday and later tried to run down two Ogden police officers and crashed a stolen pickup truck into a power pole, police alleged in charging documents.

After William Allyn Jackson’s arrest, police said in a pair of probable cause statements that he was suspected of several home and vehicle burglaries in Ogden over the previous 12 hours.

Officers responded to a report of a burglary at about 12:18 p.m. in the 3600 block of Fowler Avenue. A man there told officers that Jackson allegedly tried to break into the home through a window, then broke through a side door. The man said Jackson was holding a large claw hammer with two hands, “baseball style,” said the man owed him money and asked where the cash was.

The man and Jackson then fought, the man suffering minor injuries. Jackson then left. The man told officers that Jackson drove away in a black pickup truck.

Later in the afternoon, police were following up on a reported pickup truck theft, a black Ford F-350, which a contractor had reported stolen and was tracking via GPS. An Ogden officer was northbound on Buchanan Avenue when he came upon the pickup, southbound, which Jackson allegedly was driving.

The officer said he tried to pull the truck over but Jackson allegedly accelerated away. The officer followed, seeing the pickup truck go behind a house in the 1700 block of 21st Street.

The officer said he saw Jackson in the truck and he approached on foot, drawing his handgun and ordering Jackson to get out. Jackson put the truck in reverse and allegedly accelerated back toward the first officer and another who had just arrived. “Fearing for my life, I got out of the way to avoid being hit,” the first officer wrote.

While officers continued to tell Jackson to stop, he allegedly drove forward and crashed into a fence and a power pole, jumped out and ran away. Officers soon caught him, according to the arrest affidavit.

Jackson allegedly caused about $10,000 in damage to the pickup, the fence and the power pole, and an estimated $350 of equipment was missing from the truck.

Jackson, 31, who was listed as a felon on probation, was taken to the Weber County Jail. The Weber County Attorney’s Office on Tuesday charged him with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony, two counts of second-degree felony assault on a police officer and a second-degree felony count of auto theft.
