Verve Times - Latest News around the World

In his first game sporting the maple leaf since November, Canada’s Alphonso Davies picked up right where he left off.

The Bayern Munich star dribbled into the box against Curacao in Nations League action on Thursday and was brought down by a defender, drawing a penalty. He then calmly stepped up to the penalty spot to open the scoring for Canada at BC Place.

Not only was this Davies’s return to the Canadian men’s national team, it was also his return to Vancouver — where the 21-year-old spent four years blossoming into a star with MLS’s Whitecaps.

After drawing the penalty, Davies — despite growing up in Edmonton — made it clear he was the man to take it.

“I’m home,” he appeared to say to striker Cyle Larin.

Davies missed Canada’s last six outings in World Cup qualifying after developing symptoms of myocarditis, a mild heart condition, following a bout of COVID-19. He returned to play with Bayern on April 6, marking his first club appearance since Dec. 17.

Davies was named the CONCACAF men’s player of the year in April.
