2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vs. 2022 Ford F-150 Comparison

Ford vs. Chevy. It's one of the oldest rivalries in the automotive world. In the 21st century, the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickups battle for the annual vehicle sales crown. A couple of years ago, the Silverado dropped to third place (behind Ram), but if you include sales of the other large General Motors (GM) pickup, the GMC Sierra, the GM trucks are right there with the best-selling Ford.

Which large light-duty pickup should you buy? This 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vs. 2022 Ford F-150 comparison will help you answer that question. Each pickup comes in numerous configurations ranging from a no-frills work truck to a luxurious family hauler. But only Chevy offers a diesel engine option on its large light-duty pickup. And only Ford offers a hybrid powertrain. Once you've identified your must-haves, you'll be ready to decide between the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the 2022 Ford F-150.

Consumers researching the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will find that pricing ranges from $33,750 to $67,600, not including the $1,695 destination charge. You'll also encounter the 2022 Silverado LTD (Limited) at dealerships; this is a carryover version of the 2021 Silverado that Chevy is selling as a separate model.

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 comes in a full range of cab styles and cargo-box/bed lengths ranging from 5 feet, 10 inches to 8 feet, 2 inches. You can get a regular-cab Silverado with a single row of seating, an extended cab (known as a Double Cab) with a back seat and two rear doors, or a crew cab with a large back seat. If you have kids, get the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab.

Chevrolet offers the 2022 Silverado 1500 in WT (Work Truck), Custom, LT, Custom Trail Boss, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country, and ZR2 trim levels. The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 is a specialty off-road truck with more capability than the Trail Boss trims. Chevrolet has announced the battery-electric 2024 Silverado EV, but it's a year away.

Chevy trucks are known for their satisfying gasoline V8s. But the Silverado 1500's torque-rich Duramax diesel inline 6-cylinder offers compelling value: It's an inexpensive option, and it's more fuel-efficient than the V8s. Though most 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 trims give you a choice between 2-wheel drive (2WD) and 4-wheel drive (4WD), the Trail Boss and ZR2 trims are 4x4 only.

Save for the WT trim, all 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickups are eligible for connected services through OnStar. Useful features include remote engine start and door locking, automatic collision notification, live emergency and weather-related crisis assistance, rapid access to roadside services, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Your vehicle purchase unlocks a 30-day free trial, and if you sign up for a paid plan, you can get another two months free. All 2022 Silverados have subscription-free Teen Driver technology that helps you set limits for new drivers. It also generates an in-vehicle report card that you can review with your teenager.

The Chevrolet Complete Care program provides one complimentary scheduled maintenance visit during the first 12 months of ownership.

If you're shopping for a 2022 Ford F-150, you'll find that it ranges in price from $30,495 to $76,595, not including the $1,795 destination charge. There's also the battery-electric Ford F-150 Lightning, which is officially a 2022 model priced from $52,974 to $90,874, not including the $1,795 destination charge or applicable federal tax credits. However, most Lightning buyers will have to wait until the 2023 model year to order their trucks.

Like the Silverado 1500, Ford's large light-duty pickup is available as a regular cab, extended cab (SuperCab), or crew cab (SuperCrew) with cargo boxes ranging from 5.5 feet to 8 feet. The 2022 Ford F-150 comes in XL, XLT, Lariat, Tremor, King Ranch, Platinum, Raptor, and Limited trim levels. The all-electric F-150 Lightning comes in XLT, Lariat, and Platinum trims (the Pro trim is for fleet customers).

Of the many engines Ford offers on the 2022 F-150, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and 5.0-liter V8 offer the most bang for the buck. The F-150's PowerBoost Hybrid V6 might make sense if you prioritize lifetime fuel economy and/or plan to buy Ford's Pro Power Onboard option to use your truck as a mobile generator. You can equip most Ford F-150s with 2WD or 4WD, but the off-road-focused Tremor and Raptor are exclusively 4WD, as is the F-150 Lightning.

The F-150 comes with fewer connected services than the Silverado 1500, but almost everything's free. You can use the FordPass app to lock the doors and start the engine. You'll also get automatic collision notification if you enable 911 Assist in the Sync infotainment interface. The Wi-Fi hotspot has a 3-month complimentary trial before you must pay. Ford does not offer complimentary scheduled maintenance.

The Chevrolet Silverado ranks second among Large Light Duty Pickups in the J.D. Power 2022 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). It does not rank among the top large light-duty trucks in the J.D. Power 2021 Initial Quality Study (IQS). The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 comes with the following warranty and roadside assistance coverage:

The Ford F-150 ranks third among Large Light Duty Pickups in the 2022 VDS. It does not rank among the top large light-duty trucks in the 2021 IQS. The 2022 Ford F-150 comes with the following warranty and roadside assistance coverage:

Engines on the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 include a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a pair of naturally aspirated V8s, and the Duramax turbocharged diesel inline-6. Horsepower ranges from 277 to 420. Torque ranges from 383 to 460 pound-feet. The 4-cylinder comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The other engines use a 10-speed automatic.

A locking rear differential is standard or optional on all 2022 Silverados. Hill-descent control is also available. In keeping with its off-road mission, the Silverado ZR2 has front and rear locking differentials, plus Terrain mode, which allows one-pedal driving in off-road situations.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates diesel Silverados the highest for fuel economy. With all-season tires, you can expect 23-26 mpg in combined city and highway driving (21 mpg with all-terrain tires). Four-cylinder Chevy Silverados rate 18-20 mpg combined, while the V8 trucks return 14-18 mpg, depending on the drive configuration and tires. Expect lower fuel economy on trucks with the trailering package, which specifies a more aggressive (numerically higher) rear axle ratio.

Engines on the 2022 Ford F-150 include three V6s (two are turbocharged), the PowerBoost Hybrid V6 (which has an electric motor built into its transmission), and one V8. A second, more potent V8 will arrive later in 2022 in the Raptor R. The all-electric F-150 Lightning has front and rear electric-drive motors.

On the F-150s with conventional engines, horsepower ranges from 290 to 430, while torque ranges from 265 to 570 pound-feet. A 10-speed automatic is standard across the board, including the hybrid Ford F-150. Depending on the battery pack, the Ford F-150 Lightning makes 426 hp or 563 hp, along with 775 pound-feet of torque.

Four-wheel-drive F-150s have Deep Snow/Sand and Mud/Rut drive modes. The FX4 off-road package adds a Rock Crawl mode. The Tremor and Raptor get additional terrain modes along with Ford Trail Control and hill-descent control.

Hybrid Ford F-150s are EPA-rated for 23-25 mpg in combined city and highway driving. Other 2022 Ford F-150s rate 15-22 mpg combined. Expect lower fuel efficiency on trucks equipped for towing or off-roading.

Depending on the battery pack and trim level, the EPA rates the F-150 Lightning for 230 to 320 miles of range. Ford is offering three different onboard chargers for the all-electric pickup truck. Expect 8 to 14 hours of charging time at a Level 2 home station (or less at a DC fast charger).

The diesel Silverado is the mileage champ, but for a hybrid or battery-electric pickup, you'll want the F-150.

Consumers wanting to tow with a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab will find that the 6.2-liter V8 and Duramax diesel engines each provide a 13,200-pound tow rating (12,900 pounds on Duramax-equipped trucks with 4WD). Payload ratings on most Silverado 1500 Crew Cabs are 2,000-2,100 pounds. Keep in mind that specialty off-road models like the Chevy Silverado ZR2 (and Ford F-150 Raptor) have lower tow and payload ratings.

If you're going to tow a trailer with the 2022 Ford F-150 SuperCrew, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and 5.0-liter V8 are the best choices, as they provide tow ratings of 14,000 pounds and 13,000 pounds, respectively. Payload ratings range from 2,100 and 2,900 pounds—class-leading numbers in the large light-duty pickup class. The PowerBoost Hybrid V6 is a close third for towing with a 12,700-pound rating on properly equipped trucks and an approximately 2,000-pound payload capacity. The battery-electric F-150 Lightning is rated to tow up to 10,000 pounds (1,800-pound payload rating).

Both the Chevrolet and Ford offer an integrated factory trailer brake controller, trailer-specific camera angles to simplify the chore of connecting your trailer, and the ability to save profiles for multiple trailers. In addition, both trucks can warn you if you're at risk of jackknifing your trailer. The F-150 has a smart trailer tow connector that alerts you to any problems with the trailer (such as malfunctioning lights), while the 2022 Silverado 1500's available Advanced Trailering System can monitor trailer tire pressure.

Only the Ford F-150 offers semi-autonomous Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which manages the steering while you're backing up with a trailer. Buyers can equip the 2022 F-150 with other useful towing technology, including an onboard scales feature that estimates how much weight you're carrying in your truck and a smart hitch feature that measures tongue weight.

If you're looking for advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) on the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, you'll find that it has a standard Chevy Safety Assist package with a forward-collision warning (FCW) system with automatic emergency braking (AEB) and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning (LDW), and lane-keeping assistance (LKA).

A blind-spot warning (BSW) system with rear-cross traffic warning is optional on the 2022 Silverado. It automatically detects the length of your trailer and includes that in its coverage area. Owners can equip their High Country Silverado with GM's Super Cruise system, which provides Level 2+ hands-free, semi-autonomous driving assistance on certain limited-access highways. A rear-seat reminder system is standard on all 2022 Silverado pickups.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 4 (out of 5) stars for overall safety. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) testing, the structurally similar 2021 Silverado rated Good in most crash categories. It rates Marginal for front-passenger protection in small-overlap frontal-offset crashes.

Every 2022 Ford F-150 has a standard Ford Co-Pilot 360 package with FCW, AEB, and pedestrian detection. You'll find LDW, LKA, and BSW with rear cross-traffic warning and trailer coverage on the options list.

Ford F-150 buyers can also get Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance in the form of a traffic-jam assistance (TJA) system. It includes adaptive cruise control (ACC) with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance, evasive steering assistance (ESA), and intersection turn assistance (ITA). If you want to go hands-free, Ford offers BlueCruise, which functions much like GM's Super Cruise.

The 2022 Ford F-150 has a 5-star NHTSA safety rating, and it's an IIHS Top Safety Pick.

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500's lower trims have a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment interface with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Starting at the LT level, you can get Chevrolet's new infotainment interface with a 13.4-inch touchscreen display (with a landscape orientation), embedded Google apps, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.

All 2022 Ford F-150s have Ford's newest Sync 4 infotainment interface, which includes wireless smartphone integration and over-the-air updates. Lower-trim F-150s come with an 8-inch touchscreen display. The higher trims have a 12-inch touchscreen display that looks like a tablet computer in portrait orientation, along with factory navigation.

The Silverado has a bigger touchscreen display, but Ford has made its newest infotainment platform standard throughout the F-150 line.

Interior design has never been a strength of the current-generation Chevy Silverado. But upgrades to the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 at the LT trim level and above include higher-quality materials, a digital instrument panel, and an electronic console-mounted shifter in trucks with front bucket seats. You'll probably be comfortable in the Silverado's driver seat, and crew cabs offer ample room for rear-facing car seats.

If you want a modern-looking truck, the 2022 Ford F-150 will be more to your liking, and it has nicer furnishings. The F-150 also ranks second in the Mass Market Truck/Van category of the J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Seat Quality and Satisfaction Study for the comfort of its front seats. Adults will be happy with the headroom and legroom in the back.

The Silverado has the advantage in cargo-bed capacity, as its short bed has 62.9 cubic feet versus the F-150's 52.8 cubic feet of capacity. If you're willing to drive a long-bed crew cab, the Chevrolet offers 71.7 cubic feet compared with 62.3 cubic feet on the Ford.

Both trucks offer a power-operated tailgate. Chevy also offers the Multi-Flex tailgate, which allows you to reconfigure the gate to provide step-up access to the bed, a bed extender, or even mobile desk space. If you need an indoor workspace, Ford's Work Surface option allows you to reconfigure the center console as a laptop desk.

The F-150 has a nicer interior, but the Silverado has more cargo-bed space.
