A Mobile man who was on probation for a murder conviction at the time he robbed a CEFCO gas station in 2020, faces a mandatory life sentence in prison after a jury found him guilty Monday of felony robbery and assault.
Reginald Blevins, 36, was convicted of robbery first degree and assault second degree from an incident that occurred in January 2020.’
According to authorities, Blevins entered the gas station on Spring Hill Avenue and attempted to steal three cases of Bud Light. After being confronted by a store cashier, Blevins pulled out a revolver and threatened the employee. He then fled, and shot the unarmed cashier in the thigh.
Blevins was later arrested by authorities a few days later following a high-speed chase.
He is a habitual offender with five prior convictions, one being a class A felony, according to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office. Mandatory sentence under Alabama law for robbery first degree is life in prison without parole.
Sentencing is set for September 28.
In 2017, Blevins took a plea deal and admitted to murder in exchange of a split sentence that included three years in prison with 17 years suspended. Blevins was guilty of killing Joey O’Brien, who was riding a bicycle down Springhill near Broad Street when he was gunned down in a random act of violence.
The lack of evidence led the DA’s office to agree to a plea deal, giving Blevins a split sentence and probation, according to media reports.
“While long overdue, Reginald Blevins is now no longer a threat to the citizens of Mobile County,” said Mobile Assistant District Attorney Coy Morgan in a statement to AL.com. “His revolving door of violent crime is now closed and locked.”
