A fire at a Hardeeville residence sent one person to the hospital after firefighters rescued them from the home, according to Jasper County Fire-Rescue.

The fire happened around 7:13 a.m. July 26 as firefighters were dispatched to an activated automatic fire alarm on Sanders Road, a news release said.

The first units to arrive smelled smoke and heard an alarm. The release said a window was opened by fire-rescue personnel, who saw smoke inside the home.

Firefighters forced entry into the front door and found one occupant who was unconscious in the kitchen, the release said.

Jasper County Fire-Rescue and the Hardeeville Fire Department rescued the person, who was transported to a hospital for treatment. The fire was contained to the stove, the release said.

"Smoke alarms save lives," Jasper County Fire-Rescue said in the release. "Place your smoke alarm in the right location. Fire sprinklers save lives. Plan and practice a fire drill and how to escape your home in the event of a fire. If you see a problem, say something, and take action to reduce the risk of fire-related injuries and fatalities."

Jasper County Fire-Rescue said it can assist residents in obtaining and installing smoke detectors. They may contact the county’s risk reduction office at 843-726-7607 for assistance.
